A GPS app put a woman and her friends in deep water, literally! Following directions from a Global Positioning System (GPS) app, a woman drove her Jeep into a lake whilst on a road trip with her friends in Vermont.
The three friends from Connecticut who were on a ski vacation, were driving in Vermont following the GPS when they realised their vehicle was sinking into Lake Champlain.
"I was speechless. My first thing was, 'Is everybody OK?' Because this could have had a very bad ending, and luckily everybody was alright," Tara Guertin, the owner of the Jeep was quoted saying.
Though all the three in the Jeep escaped unhurt, many have questioned the reliability of the Google-owned Waze app which allows users to report accidents and traffic snarls, as well as edit its maps.
"It's impossible to comment here without seeing the user's driving file and we haven't received permission to do so-generally speaking, Waze maps are updated with millions of edits to adapt to real time road conditions daily, often making them the most accurate available," a spokesperson for Google told the Burlington Free Press.
The spokesperson also said that the company encourages drivers to keep their eyes on the road and not follow the app's directions blindly.
Meanwhile, Guertin told that it was too late when she realized the car was in the water, adding, dark and foggy conditions prevented them from driving back off from the lake.
She also stated that when after climbing out of the vehicle safely, the three friends checked the same directions again on the map and were surprised to get the same results.
