A disabled mother was shocked to find that she was left with only £8 (Dh37.94) in her bank account after her 10-year-old son spent her money on online games.
Cleo Duckett, 46, who is a single mother of two, said her son used her bank card to spend £1,193.25 (Dh5,700 approx) on multi-player online shooting game Fortnite.
Duckett, who suffers from polio and is on a wheelchair, said she will have to 'survive for five days without money' until her next benefit payment of £700 on September 6.
"My son started crying and admitted he had used my bank card behind my back, typed my details into his Xbox and bought lots of games on Fortnite. He spent £1,193.25, leaving me around £245 into my overdraft," Mirror quoted Duckett as saying.
Fortnite is currently one of the most popular video games among young people, garnering some 45 million players, according to Epic Games. The program contains in-game purchases where players can buy outfits and other items.
Revealing she had to dig funds out of her son's savings account, Duckett told Media Wales, "I only found out about it all when I went to use the cash machine and there was only £8 left in my account." Not long after that, the mother received a text from the bank saying she was now in her overdraft which she was asked by the bank staff to cover. "The bank is refusing to help me because they said my boy is my responsibility and I am responsible for his actions," Duckett said.
"I'm not a criminal. I haven't stolen the money or spent it on games for myself. I've been with the bank for more than 20 years and they're just not helping me at all," she added.
"I'm a single parent and I've got to survive five days with no money. I've got to buy food and pay for electric and gas and I've been left to manage on my own," Duckett said.
