After a six-day rescue operation, two-year-old boy Fatehveer Singh was declared dead on Tuesday. The boy had fallen into an open borewell in north India.
The child was taken to the PGI hospital in Chandigarh, some 130km from the accident spot, soon after he was retrieved from the well.
Lack of expertise and technical snags one after the other were blamed for the delay in the massive rescue operation.

Over the years, the number of abandoned borewells have increased manifold after a steep fall in underground water. We take a look at the major rescue operations over the years:
March 2019
Nadim, an 18-month-old child, was safely rescued after he fell into a 60-foot deep borewell while playing near his house in Balsamand village in Hisar district of Haryana. Nadim was rescued after a 48-hour-long struggle by the army and NDRF personnel.
The boy was playing with his friends when he suddenly fell into the borewell.
February 2019
Six-year-old Ravi Pandit Bhill was stuck at a depth of 10 feet in a 200-foot-deep borewell in Maharashtra's Pune district early this year. He was out after a 16-hour-long operation after falling into the borewell. He was playing near the borewell while his father, a labourer, was busy with road construction work.
January 2019
A 3-year-old boy was rescued after falling into a 30-foot-deep borwell in Singrauli district.
The child fell inside the borewell at his father's farm. A team rushed to the spot and the kid was rescued after a three-hour operation.
August 2018
A three-year-old girl, Sana, fell into a 160-foot-deep borewell while playing and was stuck at 43 feet. Unable to pull her out, her relatives called the local administration to help with the rescue operation. The girl was luckily rescued after 28 hours. An L-shaped hole was dug near the borewell to reach Sana.
June 2017
A toddler who was stuck in a borewell for 60 hours died despite a massive rescue operation at Ikkareddygudem village in Telangana's Rangareddy district, about 70 km from Hyderabad. Eighteen-month-old Veena had accidentally fallen into the open borewell and got stuck around a depth of 40 feet. The well was approximately 450 feet deep, according to Hindustan Times.
July 2006
A massive operation was launched in July 2006 to rescue five-year-old Prince, who had fallen into a borewell in a village in Kurukshetra. He was pulled out safely nearly 48 hours later. As he was in the bore well for over 48 hours, the entire nation prayed for this rescue. News channels went overboard to cover the rescue operation live.
