Among those killed included a policeman, a woman and several activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP), both bitter critics of each other.
The law and order situation in the past 24 hours worsened to the extent that the authorities clamped section 144 in the city and also banned pillion riding until further orders.
The latest killings brought strong protest by the ANP whose city leaders placed the blame squarely on Sindh authorities alleging it had utterly failed to curb violence and there was no government writ in the city.
The bloodiest incident occurred when gunmen riding on motorcycles opened fire at a tea house in North Karachi’s ‘Disco Morr’, injuring six people who were taken to Abbasi Shaheed hospital, but five of them succumbed to their injuries.
Police claimed it was an act of target killing and identified the men as Sherjeel, Naveed, Zahoor, Shaukat and Atif. The injured man Hassan was being treated at the hospital.
Three people were shot dead by unknown assailants in North Karachi. They were identified as Faizan, Yahya and Majeed.
Two people were shot dead at Water Pump roundabout of Karachi’s Federal B. Area late on Friday as rival armed gangs traded gunfires in various localities of the city throughout Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday creating panic among the residents.
An unidentified middle-aged woman was shot dead in the troubled Lyari area on Saturday which triggered tension in the area. Police and Rangers were called in to control the situation.
