Isn't the smell of freshly brewed coffee one of the best aromas to catch a whiff of first thing in the morning? One might even argue that a bad cup of coffee is better than no coffee at all. It's no wonder then that there are so many coffee shops in town.
Now, we all know that coffee not only supercharges our senses but also has some health benefits. The essential question here is whether you drink your coffee black or with loads of milk. (Noticed how I didn't even bother asking if you add sugar? That's because even a kid knows sugar is bad for you. So, let's leave that out of our discussion for now.)
Surveys will show most people drink their coffee with milk. Is that a good thing or not? Let me break it down.
Coffee should preferably be organic. You can buy it fresh, or grind your own beans and brew it. Yes, it is tedious but this is where good coffee comes from - not from instant packs. You can argue not everyone is that passionate about coffee nor do they have luxury of time. A quality brand of instant coffee is, therefore, the next available choice.
The best way to drink your coffee is. black. Coffee contains antioxidants called polyphenols that energise you, increase metabolism, give your mind clarity, and enhance performance when consumed before a workout.
There is no harm if you wish to add a splash of milk, almond milk or coconut milk to your coffee - but remember, just a splash will do. Coffee has high pH levels and can cause acidity when consumed on an empty stomach. If you are one of those who need milk with their coffee, add a splash of almond or coconut milk. Else, try to enjoy it black.
The problem is many people add coffee over milk, instead of milk over coffee. I'm sure you know what I mean. The milk that's boiled and brewed with sugar and coffee powder for so long (especially in Indian households) is a sure-shot recipe for weight gain and bloated bellies. Avoid this at all costs.
If you have insulin resistance, you could add cinnamon to black coffee. Alternatively, adding cocoa powder or ground cacao nibs can increase the potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory content of your morning drink. You will be bouncing with energy because it is such a mood booster.
Now for a bit of a strange question: is adding coconut oil or having coffee with ghee or butter beneficial? If you ask me, I prefer coconut oil over ghee or butter any day. Coconut oil has a fatty acid called MCT that speeds up your metabolism when taken with caffeine. But if your goal is to control calories or fat intake, or if you have any medical issues or high cholesterol, then this coffee is not meant for you.
One last suggestion: have you tried adding some grated ginger to your black coffee? It aids digestion, if you want to give it a shot.
