The storm, which has been named Nanauk, is expected to weaken over the next two days – before heading for the Oman coast.
A statement issued by NCMS said: “Latest satellite imagery, observations and weather reports indicate that a tropical storm has formed about 960km southeast of Masirah Island (Oman). The storm’s surface speed is estimated to be between 70 and 90 km/hr.”
Weather department officials are predicting the storm would intensify over the Arabian Sea during June 12-13 before starting to weaken from June 14, near the coast of Oman between Alhadd and Ras Madrakah.
“The weather model charts don’t show any direct effect on the UAE over the next four days,” added the NCMS update.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also confirmed the presence of the Nanauk storm over east-central Arabian sea.
“It would intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. It would move west-north-westwards towards Oman coast during the next 120 hours,” it said.
According to IMD, under the influence of this system, rainfall would occur at most places with isolated heavy rain over coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep in the next 24 hours.
Strong winds reaching the speed of 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph would prevail along and off Konkan and south Gujarat coast during the next 24 hours. Sea condition would be rough along and off Konkan, Goa and south Gujarat coast in India during the same period.
