A woman has been ordered by the Ras Al Khaimah Misdemeanour Court to pay a fine of Dh10,000 for swearing at her daughter's mother-in-law and threatening her on WhatsApp.
However, the court cleared the latter - the second defendant - of using abusive language against the woman on the phone.
As per the sheet of indictment, the RAK Public Prosecution charged both of them.
The first accused denied the accusations and called them baseless.
"I neither insulted the second suspect nor threatened her," she told the court.
The second accused also denied the charges, adding that she was only reacting to the insults she received from the first defendant via WhatsApp.
The defence lawyer of the second defendant said the two swore at each other privately without any family member being involved or aware of it.
"My client was only reacting to the insults of the first suspect and she did not mean anything criminal when replying to her."
He added that the insults the first defendant hurled at his client (second defendant) have been recorded and verified on WhatsApp.
"The first suspect told the police that she did not know who insulted her on the phone, and hence she did not clearly accuse my client."
The first defendant did not lodge a complaint after the "alleged insult", he pointed out. "Her contradictory statements with the police and prosecution prove that they were baseless and fabricated."
The court turned down the allegations of the first suspect, found her guilty, and ordered her to pay Dh10,000 in fine.
