Much to the delight of her parents and teachers, a visually impaired student of Delhi Private School (DPS) Sharjah, has scored extraordinary results in the CBSE Grade 10 board exams.
Despite being a glaucoma patient from birth, 18-year-old Asma Abbas has done the impossible and scored an impressive 94.4 per cent results in the boards.
Asma gives full credit to her teachers, mother, and her scribe at school for the results.
A long-time resident of Sharjah, Asma was diagnosed with glaucoma right from birth. It was difficult for her parents to find a school that would admit her, given her visual impairment, and she was enrolled late.
"I am thrilled with the results. I was expecting something over 90 per cent, but I am just delighted," Asma told Khaleej Times. Her mother Sakina said, "She scored good marks, 97 in Hindi and 96 in English, 99 in computer studies, 94 in social studies, and 86 in math. We are very proud of her."
"I was six or seven when I first started school. I can manage a lot of work alone, but I need help reading and writing. After Grade 7, my vision got poor, so I began taking the help of scribes to write exams," said Asma, who is also sensitive to sunlight.
She said mathematics was a difficult subject as she could not see diagrams or charts. "However, my teachers helped out in the classroom. Also, I don't write notes. My classmates send WhatsApp messages of the notes, and my mother helps me complete it."
Asma is a scholar student at DPS and spends eight to ten hours completing notes and finishing homework. "I've always taken a keen interest in academics. For the boards, I would wake up very early in the morning to study. that is something that helped me," she said.
She gives full credit for her success to her mother. "My mom is a housewife and she has always helped me study. I've never gone for tuitions or additional studies . It has always been my mom's help." Her scribe Abhirami helped her write the board exams. "I was anxious before the boards because the study portions were so vast, but my mother helped me through the stress."
