The flag was designed by Emirati Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, with a horizontal tricolour of green, white and black with a vertical, 1/4 width red bar at the hoist. It was first hoisted on December 2, 1971, after the country's formation by the union of the seven emirates.
Al Maainah's design was chosen during a national competition to design the flag, which was announced by the Emiri Diwan of Abu Dhabi and published in a local daily, some two months prior to the announcement of the UAE Federation.

Over 1,030 designs participated in the competition, with six being shortlisted before the final flag was chosen.
On November 3 every year, the UAE flag holds a National Flag Day, which coincides with the appointment anniversary of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the President of the UAE.
"The UAE flag is our national pride and symbolises unity and peace," said 70-year-old Emirati Hussein Jassim, a resident of Abu Dhabi. "The flag is used at all national events and represents the ambitions and values of UAE citizens - pride, dignity, peace and happiness."
