The Federal Traffic Council has launched a nationwide campaign called 'Desert without Blood' that will target stunt driving done on motorcycles and also dune buggies in the desert.
Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, chairman of the Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police Operations, announced that Desert without Blood includes new measures to protect young people from driving risks caused by bikes and recreational vehicles. He added that motorcycles have caused 107 accidents since the beginning of the year, resulting in 13 deaths and injuries in 113 people.
To avoid these, the campaign will identify specific safe places for biking and also confiscate bicycles used on the public highway or non-designated areas. Al Zafeen stressed that parents had a responsibility to protect and educate their children on such potentially dangerous recreational hobbies.
Motorcycles in generally lack many security aspects and their open structure - unlike a car - leaves the rider unprotected, so many accidents end up being fatal, in addition to the various injuries caused, which is a worrying indicator, he said.
Al Zafeen said that the Federal Traffic Council has recommended to generalise the traffic campaigns to enhance the safety of road users and reduce accidents. The campaign will be launched federally in the near future and the each emirate's traffic departments were to take initiatives commensurate with its respective areas and activity. In Dubai, for instance, the traffic department will allocate two pick-up vans to tour areas where young people commonly gather and distribute awareness brochures.
There is also a strong focus on smaller children, who are often given heavy bicycles by their ?parents. These bikes are difficult ?to control, and the kids tend to ?indulge in dangerous actitivies leaving them vulnerable to overturning and dangerous injuries.
