A sheet of white covered different areas of the country on Sunday and residents stepped out to make the best of the snow-like conditions. Images of a snowman and snowballs (presumably for fights) made of hail did the rounds on social media, while residents spoke about experiencing the sheer joy of holding ice in their hands. One resident said he was so excited that he ate a piece of ice.
Hail and snow was reported on the Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak. Ahmed Al Shehi, an Emirati, shared a video that showed hail pelting him atop the mountain.
Hail fell for about eight minutes in Dubai's Jumeirah area. B.V., who stays at a villa on Al Wasl Road, said: "The lawn in front of our house was blanketed by a sheet of white. The kids in the house came out and played with it. I even ate a piece!"
In Sharjah, hail hit the Taawun area. Saima Salim, who works in the area, said: "I have never experienced hailstorm before. We were working on our laptops when we we heard sounds that seemed like someone was throwing stones at our window. We all ran down to find ice on the streets. We had so much fun."
R. Troudi, a resident of Umma Al Quwain's Salma area, also reported hail.
The National Centre of Meterology (NCM) had earlier forecast "freezing rain or snow" over some of the country's mountain peaks for Sunday.
