The UAE bagged its first medal of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 as Micah Hambleton finished first in the triathlon event on Friday.
The Daman World Triathlon Abu Dhabi 2019 held at Yas Marina Circuit became the first competition event of the Special Olympics World Games.
Micah, who started among the last wave of athletes, excelled in 750 metres of swimming, 20km cycling and 5km run.
Micah was elated with his performance and gold medal.
"I am happy," the Abu Dhabi-based triathlete said.
He summed up the true spirit of the event with these words: "This is not about winning but taking part and being there. This is a great experience for us."
Also, his brother Jonah took part in the triathlon.
"We have taken a break from our homeschooling. We have trained for nine months. We are proud and excited to be part of this," Jonah said.
Micah and Jonah are coached by three different coaches - Michael On, Debbie Schreiber and Wayne Young.
This is a great start for the hosts. The official opening ceremony of the World Games will be held at Zayed Sports City on Thursday. The UAE will be participating with 297 athletes.
