Twin 18-year-old brothers were killed in a car crash on Sharjah's Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road. Majid and Sultan Al Mazmi were on their way to register at a military college when their car crashed into a truck on Monday.
The twins were laid to rest at the Sharjah cemetery. Adhering to the #StayHome directive to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the teenagers' father received condolences over the phone instead of opening up a mourning majlis as is usually the practice.
Abdullah bin Karam Al Mazmi, father of the deceased, told Khaleej Times that only close relatives attended the burial. "Losing one's child is a painful experience. I lost two. We buried them with only a few relatives in attendance. This is the only way to prevent the spread of Covid-19," he said.
He said he felt duty-bound to adhere to the instructions from the authorities to prevent gatherings. "I received hundreds of condolence calls and messages. That helped ease my agony a little."
Al Mazmi said the teens had scored 77 and 76 per cent in high school. "They were enrolled in the national military service and good athletes, too."
