Three Sri Lankans, including two runaways, have each been sentenced to one year in jail for the robbery of Dh500,000 worth of diamonds and gold jewellery and other valuables and cash money from a villa.
The Court of First Instance ordered the defendants be deported after completing their jail terms.
The villa's owner, a 45-year-old Emirati, said the robbery took place when he was with his family in Germany for his son's treatment.
"I learnt about the robbery on August 20, 2015. It was discovered by the housemaid, who would clean and check on the villa in Al Mizhar, Al Qusais, while we were away. She told my parents," he said during the investigation.
When he came back on September 15, the complainant assessed the stolen items.
"Four diamond watches and two diamond and gold necklaces were gone."
Many rings and expensive pens were also missing. "The stolen valuables belonged to all the family members. They are worth about Dh500,000".
Part of the stolen items was recovered from the accused, 47, who is on trial.
