Some 1,800 new smart meters have been installed across Sharjah in August, as the emirate's electricity and water authority continues its smart transformation project and tech development.
Considered to be the most accurate in the world, these meters ensure that residents get error-free bills every month. Currently, there are more than 200,000 smart meters across the neighbourhoods in Sharjah.
Rashid Al Leem, chairman of the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa), said smart meters can also detect any form of tampering. Their life span is between 15 and 20 years and, in terms of production cost, they are cheaper than mechanical meters.
Inside Sewa's meter laboratory, the latest devices are also in use. Portable high-tech tools are also used to check meters on site.
Omar Al Zarouni, who is in charge of implementing projects at the meters office, explained that besides installing the smart meters, their team also checked 8,204 meters and repaired 225 of them in August.
During these checks, the group of technicians who are going building to building and house to house are also replacing old meters with smart ones.
Al Zarouni pointed out that excessive load and illegal connection are some of the main causes of malfunction in electricity meters. Once a meter is examined and an illegal installation is found, a report with pictures is prepared and sent to the subscriber service department for action.
Sewa vows to continue its projects of modernising all devices to deliver the best services to its consumers.
