The "We Are All Police" initiative of the Dubai Police has caught more than 100,000 violations in the first nine months of 2017. Residents in Dubai have helped in catching 90,493 violations committed by motorists through the programme. Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the Dubai Traffic Police, said the programme allows residents to record violations and help in abiding by traffic laws.
"Among the violations recorded, 43,461 were reported by military officials, 19,375 reported through cameras and 27,484 were recorded by the public." Smartphones were used to record 20,556 violations. The highest number of fines issued were in May, which saw 9,510 traffic violations registered by the police.
"We Are All Police has given residents an avenue to bring to authorities' notice any violation by motorists, which could be putting their lives or other people's lives at risk on the road," he said.
Brigadier Al Mazroui explained that they do not immediately issue fines to motorists when they receive the complaints.
"After residents report violators, either through the app or by calling the police, the violator immediately receives a call from the police and is informed about his or her violation. The police verify whether the driver was present on the same road when the report was made against him. When the same complaint is made more than once against the driver, a fine is issued."
