The RAK Police have arrested a gang of unidentified residents attempting to sell counterfeit notes worth Dh49,000 in Dh1,000 denominations recently.
Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, the Criminal investigations Department, said: "One of the gangsters implicated in the crime was apprehended red-handed while transferring Dh49,000 through a money exchange house in the Ras Al Khaimah city."
Brigadier Abdullah Mankhas, Director of the Criminal Investigations Department with RAK police, said the suspect "claimed to have collected the said cash from a person unknown to him."
"The mastermind of the crime was caught while trying to flee out of the country through a land border point," he added.
Another suspect, who was residing at a nearby emirate, was arrested later.
A special CID team was formed to collect details about the gang behind the crime.
The case has been moved to the RAK Public Prosecution for legal action, he noted.
"All traders, owners and managers of shops and offices across the country have to be cautious when dealing with cash to remain safe from counterfeit notes."
He urged them to use devices that could detect forged money, and report the same to the police.
Last year, "An African resident was caught with a large amount of counterfeit cash, of US$100 denominated notes each," he said.
