Consumers in Abu Dhabi are complaining about the rise in prices of some products at retail outlets. Certain products witnessed up to a 50 per cent increase in their prices within a short period of time.
Consumers like Fatmah Al Masroui told Emarat Al Youm that few products have witnessed unreasonable increase in their prices. A pair of gloves she bought for Dh12.6 now costs Dh18.90 three months later.
Another consumer, Saeed Al Katbi, was quoted saying he noticed a 43 per cent increase in price of a food product.
Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department, Ministry of Economy, warned retailers that raising the price of a product without the ministry's approval was a violation punishable by fines up to Dh100,000.
He further emphasised that increasing price of a product will result in preventing retail outlets from selling them as well.
Al Nuaimi called out to all retail outlets to not raise prices unless they receive an official approval from the ministry regarding the new price. He also urged consumers to report local economic departments and authorities in case they witness any suspicious increase in the price, so the authority can take necessary action.
