The Ras Al Khaimah Police have managed to nab five Asian residents here while abusing and peddling heroin.
Col Adnan Ali Al Zaabi, director of the anti-narcotics department of the RAK police, on Tuesday said that they were alerted about the gang by undercover agents.
"A special team was immediately formed to start investigations, verify the tip-offs, and track down the suspects who later proved to be blue workers here"
The five druggies were involved in abusing and trafficking in narcotics in general, and heroin in particular, he added.
"The accused were bussed red-handed with heroin (unidentified amount) in their possession," he said. "The drugs and the seizure were referred to the RAK public prosecution for legal action."
Studies show that young people aging 14-20 are not well aware of the consequences of addiction to drugs, of which some are affordable and easily accessible, he stated. "They easily fall prey to wicked drug dealers."
Warning, Col Al Zaabi said the RAK police shall deals with drug producers, smugglers, and dealers with zero tolerance. "They are targeting our youth, destroying our presence and future, and destabilizing our security and stability."
However, the RAK police is all set to provide assistance to drug addicts with no legal action against the addict or any of his family members, as per the latest amendment introduced to Article No (43), clause No (2) of the federal law No (8/2016), he underlined.
"A lawsuit shall not be filed against any drugs or narcotics abuser if he willing requested help from the addiction treatment unit, the public prosecution or the police."
The same applies if he was brought to the same by his spouse or any relative, up to second degree, seeking treatment at the unit, he pointed out. "He shall then be kept in until the unit decides to release him, though."
Parents are urged to keep an eye on their children and protect them against narcotics, Col Al Zaabi said. "It is not only the responsibility of law enforcement bodied to curb drugs; it is rather of all members of the society.
