The Federal Traffic Council has ordered tougher penalties against drivers who drive at 50 per cent faster speed than the speed limit of the road. Its recommendations include confiscating their car and charging errant driver with endangering the lives of others. The Head of the Federal Traffic Council and Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police Operational Affairs, Major-General Mohammed Said Al Zafin, said that the council studied the causes of accidents of the last three years, and determined that they will also reduce the maximum speed on roads to 130km per hour without the margin.
The Council also recommended the deployment of a radar every 2km and the installation of trucks that can detect the number of driving hours for truckers to ensure they are not subject to fatigue and cause accidents.
According to Major General Al Zafin, 40 per cent of deaths over the past year occurred on highways, and that run-over accidents caused 25 per cent of deaths, while truck accidents led to 15 per cent of deaths and motorcycles five per cent. However, maximum number of deaths were attributed to speeding (70%), he added.
To solve the problem of traffic congestion, especially at peak hours, the traffic council has recommended dividing work hours in federal and local departments into two groups, from 7am to 2pm and 7:30am to 2:30pm, avoiding the school timings which usually open at 8am.
