As many as 1,518 abandoned vehicles were impounded by the RAK Police since launching its campaign against unattended vehicles two months ago.
Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, General Commander of the Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the campaign was initiated on October 14 and ended December 15.
"Figures show that 238 abandoned vehicles were seized in the first week, 302 in the second, 201 in the third, 144 in the fourth, 56 in the fifth, 48 in the sixth, 52 in the seventh, and 18 in the eighth," he said.
Brigadier Mohammed Saeed Al Humaid, director-general of the central operations room, RAK Police, said they first placed warning notices on 459 vehicles left unattended at public places. "The owners of these vehicles were given a grace period of 10 days to remove their vehicles from public places and keep them clean."
This grace period was given to the owners of the vehicles which are in good condition, fit for running on the road, and with valid registration, he explained. "If the car had been old and in a terrible condition, unfit for running or partially damaged, no grace period was given and the vehicle was instantly seized and shifted the RAK Police impoundment yard. The same applied to any vehicle without a number plate or an expired registration, he added.
"The RAK Police had specified 10 traffic patrols in the morning shift to spot any abandoned vehicle in the emirate."
The owners of abandoned vehicles who failed to shift them in time, can recover their impounded vehicles after making payment of due fine, he said. "The RAK Police have a capacity of 500 impoundment spaces for the abandoned vehicles."
