More than 1,270 motorists were fined on UAE roads last year for not complying with traffic rules during foggy conditions, authorities have revealed.
New figures issued by the Ministry of the Interior also indicate that traffic agencies across the country recorded 1,098 violations against motorists caught driving during extreme foggy weather, which is against traffic regulations. Authorities also registered 175 violations for driving in fog without using the low lights.
To curb such unsafe driving during low visibility conditions this year, the traffic departments have intensified their patrols on the highways and main streets to alert motorists about the dangers of speeding and committing other traffic offenses, as well as deter them from pulling over the road sides.
The penalty for not adhering to safe driving instructions during fog is Dh500 and four black points, according to the Federal Traffic Law.
Fog expected this week
Dr Ahmed Habib from the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) earlier this week told Khaleej Times that fog was expected in scattered areas of the UAE as humidity levels have started rising and summer temperatures gradually dropping.
"Minimum and maximum temperatures will decrease over the coming days. Fog is expected during early morning hours from Tuesday to Saturday," he pointed out.
The Abu Dhabi Police on Tuesday reported the death of three people following a road accident during the morning hours as a result of driver's lack of attention and low visibility conditions.
