For the first time in history, the Indian National Congress will be including recommendations from the non-resident Indian (NRI) community in the party's 2019 election manifesto.
Senior members of India's primary opposition party, led by the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) Sam Pitroda and secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Himanshu Vyas, and other party officials heard recommendations from a total of 180 non-resident Indian (NRI) professionals and technocrats from 10 countries across the globe on Friday and Saturday, February 22, 23 in Dubai.
The NRI delegates from UAE, the GCC, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and several other countries were divided into 14 subject groups including health, industry, trade, agriculture, education, etc. Speaking to Khaleej Times on the side lines of the two-day conference, Pitroda has assured that all recommendations provided by the NRI community will be heard by the Manifesto committee.
Pitroda said the party decided to take recommendations from NRIs for three reasons. "We wanted to understand what the Congress can do for NRIs, what NRIs can do for India, and learn about the various areas of improvement in Indian governance," added Pitroda.
The head of the IOC said this event is following a promise made by Congress president Rahul Gandhi during his visit to the UAE earlier this year. Pitroda said, "The destiny of India will be decided during this election. All inputs presented by the NRI community will get a proper hearing. I'm on the Manifesto committee, and I will certainly look at the final draft before it goes into print."
