Who says sending postcard is passé? Probably not for Dubai residents and visitors who can now send letters from the world's 'highest mailbox', located at the 125th floor of Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower.
The 'post office corner' situated At The Top opened on Sunday as Emaar Properties and Emirates Post Group unveiled a commemorative stamp to mark the sixth year of the opening of the iconic tower.
"Burj Khalifa is a global icon and the pride of our nation. (it) has become one of the most photographed monuments in the past six years," said Ahmad Al Falasi, executive director-Group Operations of Emaar Properties. "The launch of the commemorative stamp is a fitting tribute to the vision behind Burj Khalifa."
The stamp, which "celebrates six years of Dubai's awe-inspiring skyline depicting Burj Khalifa rising majestically above Downtown Dubai at sunset in all its resplendent glory," is available at the retail kiosks At the Top and at all Emirates Post office. It is sold in denomination of Dh3, along with a souvenir sheet and first day cover.
A team from Burj Khalifa and Emirates Post Group designed the commemorative stamp with 5,000 pieces, according to Ibrahim Bin Karam, chief commercial officer of Emirates Post Group (EPG).
But why would anyone still bother to send a snail mail? "If you're a tourist and you visited Burj Khalifa, you can buy a postcard and send it to your family and friends back home. Then you can (proudly) say that you've sent it from the 'highest post box' in the world," explained Bin Karam. "The stamp will travel and it can become an ambassador to educate the people about the culture and tradition of the UAE," added Bin Karam.- angel@khaleejtimes.com
