You can now take a ride on traditional abras for as low as Dh2 in Ajman. Three new abra stations have been opened in the emirate as part of the second phase of its marine transportation strategy. A ride on the abra is a scenic one as overlooks the Ajman Creek.
Rasha Al Shamsi, executive director of support and project development at the Ajman Public Transportation Corporation (APTC), told Khaleej Times that each abra can accommodate up to 20 passengers. They will operate from 6am to 8pm.
As part of the first phase of the project, the APTC had opened abra stations in Al Zawra and the fish market. The new stations are at Musheraf, Safia and Rashidiya.
"Maritime transport has recently achieved a qualitative leap, due to the integrated strategic plan developed by the APTC to enhance services. The maritime transport system in the emirate has contributed to encouraging many people to use the public transport system. This, in turn, has reduced congestion and minimised carbon emissions," said Al Shamsi.
She said residents are "attracted to maritime transport means" as they are quick, affordable and comfortable.
Al Shamsi said the traditional Abra design contributes to the revival of the UAE heritage and the preservation of the national identity. "It reflects the cultural heritage of the UAE in general and Ajman in particular, and fuses the traditional and modern. Users will enjoy the highest levels of security and safety," she added.
She pointed out that bus stations are close to the Abra stations "in order to facilitate movement between different means of transport".
