A technician is standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on the charge of possession and smuggling bid of over 3kg of crystal meth.
Public prosecution records show that the 35-year-old technician, a Nigerian, was arrested in a sting operation by the anti-narcotics officers of the Dubai Police on March 22. The arrest happened after he tried to smuggle crystal meth, weighing over 3.1kg, hidden in toys to New Zealand via a shipping agency.
He is under detention.
A police lieutenant said that the case unfolded when they received a report about a problem at a shipping company in Al Muraqqabat.
"We went to the company. We were told by the employee, who made the call, that a man (the defendant) dropped a box of children toys which he wanted to be sent to New Zealand."
That employee told the police that he checked the shipment and found the weights of the toys were not the same. "He reported the incident to the police after opening one of the toys and finding a roll containing a white substance," the lieutenant said.
When the anti-narcotics department police officers checked the substance, they suspected it to be crystal meth.
The shipment was 11 toys of different colours and shapes. "All the toys were inspected and the same crystal substance was found stashed inside all of the toys, except one. The drugs were seized and an arrest warrant was issued against the defendant," the lieutenant told the prosecutor.
After checking the CCTV cameras at the shipping firm, it was confirmed that the defendant was the same person who had dropped the toys box there. He was arrested in a sting operation after he was called by the same employee to go there again.
The accused will be sentenced on August 30.
