A 32-year-old driver has been detained by the Dubai Police after he sexually harassed a female swimmer at a beach.
The Pakistani man went on trial at the Court of First Instance on Sunday. The hearing was held in private.
During the public prosecution investigation, the complainant, a 39-year-old Filipina cleaner, said that the incident took place on August 2 when she was with her friends swimming in Jumeirah.
"The defendant was swimming there and he kept harassing us. He would go when told to stay away; but then come back again."
She was still swimming about half an hour later when he suddenly swam very close to her. She recalled that he forcibly hugged and inappropriately touched her.
After she pushed him away and screamed, he swam away to the beach and left the water. She chased him and asked beachgoers to restrain him.
Her friend, a 42-year-old Filipina cleaner, said she witnessed the incident.
When on-duty patrol police officers responded to the call made by the woman, the defendant confessed he swam close to her but claimed he touched her thigh by mistake. He was arrested then.
The defendant will be sentenced on September 18.
