'Marking Moments in Time' was unveiled yesterday by Bilal Al Budoor, Executive Director of Culture and Art at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, in the presence of Khaleej Times editors, managers and other staff.
"It is a wonderful exhibition. It brings back so many memories…," said Al Budoor. As he stopped to read various headlines and stories published over the past three decades, Al Budoor was impressed with the wide spectrum of news covered by the paper.
"It is great that your newspaper pays a lot of attention to what is happening in the Gulf area and the choice of photography is also highly inspiring," he added.
'Marking Moments in Time' displays a selection of Khaleej Times' front pages from 1978 to 2008, reminding young and old generations of readers of the historical events revealed to them in time and in depth over the decades — from the "Breakthrough at Camp David", the 1978 Middle East peace summit attended by then US President Jimmy Carter, to the happy days of 2007, when the UAE team won the GCC football championship. The other extraordinary reports include the launching of the Gulf Cooperation Council (1981) at Abu Dhabi's Intercontinental Hotel, the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (1984), the collapse of Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall in the late '80s and early '90s, the death of Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, then Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai (1990), the finding of "Water on the Moon" (1998), the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the special edition in 2004 when the father of the UAE, Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, passed away.
The exhibition will end on June 24.
People from all walks of life, nationalities and ages stopped at the main foyer of Al Wahda Mall yesterday to tour the exhibition. Great stories and great journalism kept each one of them in front of the exhibition panels, until all stories were read.
"Khaleej Times has always given us something to reflect upon and this exhibition is the proof of that fact. I'm looking forward to discover the world everyday with Khaleej Times as I sip my mug of coffee," said Sonia Gupta, a reader.
