Holding miniature tri-coloured flags and singing patriotic songs, thousands of Indians from across the UAE celebrated India's 70th Republic Day on Saturday. The day marks the anniversary of India adopting its constitution on January 26, 1950. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the other Northern Emirates have witnessed action-packed events since Friday.
The events began with the customary ceremony of unfurling the Indian national flag in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Heads of the diplomatic missions in the Capital and in Dubai unfurled the flag early Saturday morning, after which they delivered India President Ram Nath Kovind's speech to the nation. Enthralling cultural performances were organised in various locations across the UAE.
A central theme of this year's celebrations was the '150th Year of Gandhi', which made the day a "little bit extra special". President Ram Nath Kovind said "Gandhi ji's 150th anniversary is not for India alone; it is a joy to be shared with the world."
Abu Dhabi landmarks light up
Seven major landmarks in Abu Dhabi was lit up in tri-colour in honour of the Indian Republic Day, according to the Indian embassy.
Indian ambassador to the UAE Navdeep Singh Suri said the "rare, spontaneous and special gesture" by the UAE government is a hallmark of the strong ties between India and the UAE.
"This is a visual confirmation of the state of the UAE-India relationship. Seven public buildings in Abu Dhabi carried the India tri-colour," said Suri, addressing the Indian community that gathered at the embassy premises to celebrate their country's 70th Republic Day.
Patriotic fervour ran high as the ambassador hoisted the national flag followed by the chanting of 'Jai Hind' and the rendition of the national anthem. Suri also read out the Indian president's Republic Day speech that emphasised India's pluralism and inclusivity. Schoolchildren sang patriotic songs and danced at the embassy auditorium.
The ambassador also said the welfare of the Indian workers are of primary concern and exhorted workers to approach the embassy when they face difficulties. "It is your right to get paid every month. You must not hesitate to approach the embassy when you have salary issues. We are here to help you."
