A Dubai expat is facing trial for allegedly trying to snatch a gold necklace off a woman on the street. The Court of First Instance was told how the 23-year-old Pakistani man's bid was foiled after the woman screamed for help. Two passersby rushed to her aid and chased after the accused for about 500 metres before they caught him. After they brought him to her, the accused apologised, the complainant said.
The incident was reported on November 30 last year at the Bur Dubai police station.
"I was walking home from a clinic after 10pm when a man (the defendant) got close to me from behind and tried to snatch my gold necklace," the complainant, a 32-year-old Indian housewife, recounted during the public prosecution investigation. "I screamed for help. Two passersby chased and caught the man."
The woman was left with some lacerations on her neck.
A 41-year-old Pakistani businessman witnessed the incident near a supermarket in Al Satwa. "It was 10.30pm. She had a little girl with her. He could not remove the necklace and ran away after she screamed. I chased after him along with another man who was with me."
A 21-year-old Pakistani driver gave a similar testimony in front of the investigator. Both of the witnesses said the defendant had pepper spray with him at the time.
The defendant will be sentenced on March 8.
