Technology giant Apple is offering a free summer camp to children in the UAE, where the young ones will be taught to create stories in iMovie, coding games and create music.
About 15 kids attended a session at the Mall of the Emirates Apple Store, where they learned how to create stories in motion on iMovie. The Apple Summer Camp, started on Monday, will continue till July 28 at the Apple Store in the Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall and Yas Mall.
Khaleej Times spoke to some of the children who participated and many said they wanted to use the knowledge they learn from experts at Apple and make their own YouTube videos.
"People make YouTube videos such as vlogs and prank videos - to get views, money and fame and that's what I want to do," said 13-year-old Ukrainian student Younes Al Ameer. "I've tried to make YouTube videos, but haven't succeeded. But with what I'm learning here, I will try again on my laptop."
Meanwhile, Jordanian student Rama Al Hindi, 14, is interested in making YouTube tutorials. "The class was helpful and added value to my knowledge. It taught me how to picture things. I like doing how to do tutorial videos, adventure videos and 'a day in my life'. I can apply what I learned here to the videos I want to make," she said.
Nariman Al Hindi, Rama's mother, said that taking lessons from experts at Apple is a good opportunity for anyone who is interested in this field. "I think it is a good opportunity to explore and have fun at the same time. She is learning from experts at Apple and that's a big deal," she said.
There will be three different kinds of workshops at the summer camp - creating characters and composing music, stories in motion with iMovie and coding games and programming robots.
The kids will also create their own stories through drawings and sounds at the summer camp. The session will start by sketching characters and scenes with iPad Pro and Apple Pencil; then they will explore the basics for composing a track using GarageBand. They'll bring their story to life by adding vocals and finishing touches.
Future filmmakers will explore the creative processes of turning their ideas into real movies. Campers will also learn how to brainstorm and do a storyboard. They will get hands-on with movie-making techniques like learning camera angles and editing with iMovie. On the final day, they will present their masterpieces.
Kids will also learn visual-based coding by solving puzzles with Tynker, how to programme Sphero robots, and even create stories starring Sphero as the main character.
