A security guard, who allegedly stole Dh2,000 from a charity box in a bank, has been charged in the Court of First Instance with theft of money belonging to a public entity.

The 25-year-old Indian guard was also charged with damaging a public property. According to prosecution documents, he damaged the box worth Dh1,500.
The court heard that the guard used a paper cutter to break the box and steal the money on July 29, 2016.
The guard admitted to the charges, during interrogation. He said that he had been working at the bank on the Sheikh Zayed Road for about 10 months when he decided to steal.

He was at the reception when he pushed the box down but it did not break. So he brought a paper cutter from a desk and used it to open the box from which he stole Dh 930.
Upon completing his shift, he left and went to a money transfer office and sent Dh 915 to his family in India.
A CCTV footage showing the guard stealing the charity money at around 8:00 pm was part of the file.

A letter by the charity authority manager dated November 28, 2016, in follow-up to the theft complaint, put the box price at Dh1,500 and estimated the money that was stolen at Dh2,000.
