A security guard arrested for stealing Dh5 million from a vehicle that was transporting cash from a shopping mall has told the police that his girlfriend masterminded the heist.
The Kenyan guard had distracted other guards and fled with the cash as the vehicle stopped at Deira City Centre on March 4. His girlfriend fled the country after taking Dh3 million of the stolen amount, he told investigators.
During the public prosecution investigation, the suspect said the woman befriended him at his workplace in Hamriya area. During their conversations, he told her a part of his job profile was to receive cash from companies and transport it.
It was during one such conversation that the woman suggested he steal the cash and they share it equally between themselves, he told investigators. The suspect said he agreed and they hatched the plan.
On the day of the incident, he collected cash from money exchanges and distracted two other guards before stealing the cash box. As planned, he met his girlfriend in a lift at the Deira City Centre and handed over the box to her. He then went back to his colleagues to avoid any suspicion. About an hour later, he asked them to drop him back to the mall, claiming he wanted to buy a mobile phone.
On the pretext of going to the washroom, he exited the mall and took a taxi to go to the Muraqqabat area where he met his girlfriend. She gave him Dh2 million and kept the rest for herself, he claimed.
According to his statement to the investigators, he kept Dh200,000 from the amount and then handed the rest of the amount to a third suspect, who also fled the country.
He then went to the Al Nahda area, met a fourth suspect and gave him Dh24,000 to purchase some electronic goods. The fourth suspect told the police that he just bought the goods and "had no idea that the cash was stolen".
The police had arrested the first accused from a shared accommodation in Al Nahda. The police recovered a part of the Dh200,000 the suspect kept from the stolen Dh5 million. They also recovered some watches and electronic items the suspects purchased with the stolen amount.
