The decision aims to protect the safety and security of pilgrims

The unified addressing system in the capital, 'Onwani,' is almost complete. All address entrances have been mapped in both urban and rural areas, and 99 per cent of the number signs, along with the handy QR Codes, have been mounted.
Once the project is complete, 66,000 unique building numbers, 6,600 street names and 17,000 new street name signs will be completed in the Abu Dhabi City Municipality jurisdictions.
During a Press conference held on Sunday morning at the Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM), officials from ADM told Khaleej Times that modern times call for modern measures, hence it was crucial to include technology within the new addressing system.
The codes come in handy during critical times, such as in emergency situations, where it could be difficult to find a location, due to the amount of different entrances often found within each building, whether it may be commercial or residential.
The QR Codes are also important because despite the fact that street signs are written in both Arabic and English, the codes can help visitors, (who may not speak the two languages); find their location through their Smartphone device, by using Onwani's application.
Dr Abdullah Ghareeb, executive-director for property management, property regulations and registration at the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), believes that the new system will certainly help save time for those travelling in the city.
"In the areas where all signs are installed, visitors and residents of these areas will simply have to provide the street name and building number in order for anyone to find their address," he said.
