A 13-year-old Grade 9 student from Delhi Private School (DPS) Dubai won bronze medal at the recently concluded International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) held in Bali, Indonesia.
Kaoushik Murugan represented the UAE in the international competition, which saw students under 15 years of age participating from 48 other countries.
"It's amazing to win a bronze medal," Murugan told Khaleej Times. "It's the fruit of my hard work. I spent a lot of time studying but also had fun at the competition; after every single test they took us for a tour to relax and appreciate nature in nearby places," he said.
The IJSO is held in a different country every year to challenge, stimulate and encourage students in their early age to further develop their competencies in natural science, according to Ben Margoschis, department head at Meccademia Education Institute, the UAE body that shortlisted students for the international olympiad.
During the competition, students were given challenging tests in topics of science, both as theory questions and practical assignments. The tests were designed to address students' understanding of scientific concepts, and their ability to apply concepts to practical situations. Another important objective of the Olympiad is for young people to experience different cultures and to enable students from across the world to get to interact.
This year's theme was 'Science for Creative Innovation'. Each participating country was represented by a team of three to six students. Murugan was joined by Clester Frank Nazareth, 14, and Ahmad Afroz Quereshi, 14, from the UAE.
