With vehicle testing centres across the UAE now open, the process for car registration renewal has gone back to pre-Covid-19 days.
This means motorists need to pay their outstanding fines and get their vehicles tested before its registration can be renewed, Khaleej Times can reveal.
In Dubai, the registration of vehicles that were renewed online during the #StayHome period will remain valid for a year from the date of renewal.
As part of the #StayHome directives issued in the UAE in March this year, motorists were asked to renew their vehicle registration online.
They were allowed to do this without paying the traffic fines they had incurred and the mandatory vehicle inspection at dedicated centres. Those who had renewed their vehicles during this period had received an e-registration card on their e-mails and not the actual physical card called 'mulkiya'.
On Saturday, a customer service executive from the Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) call centre confirmed that vehicles need to be taken for testing before its registration can be renewed.
When asked if such motorists needed to get the plastic registration card, the customer service employee said: "Their renewal remains valid till next year. The electronic mulkiya is equivalent to the plastic one."
When Khaleej Times asked the employee if such motorists needed to pay their fine now, he said: "In the customer file, the pending fine will show up the moment the customer does a new transaction like car sale, driving licence renewal, etc. The customer can pay these outstanding fines any time at the kiosk machines installed at the centres or they can choose to pay them online."
