A group of teenagers involved in a fight at a public place in Dubai has been arrested. A video of the fight was posted on social media, with a senior police official warning against taking or circulating such videos.
Colonel Faisal Issa Al Qasim, director of the police's security media department, said the teenagers were arrested "within minutes" after the fight. "The police took legal action against them and also called their parents. The teenagers have signed an undertaking to not repeat the act," said the officer.
Colonel Faisal warned residents against taking photos and videos of other people without their permission, as doing so is a punishable crime. Circulating such videos is also considered a crime as it is "an invasion of their privacy".
According to federal decree law no. 5 of 2012 of the cybercrime law, residents who breach the privacy of others can face a fine between Dh150,000 and Dh500,000, in addition to at least one year in jail.
Even registered media outlets are not allowed to film people without permission, he stressed.
"It is the right of a person to prosecute anyone who takes his photos or videos without permission even if he is a criminal," the officer said.
