Dubai Police maritime rescue teams managed to rescue a group of sailors who were stranded on board their wooden ship off the Palm Deira Island Beach, said Major Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi, Head of the Maritime Rescue and Transport Department of the General Department of Operations of the Dubai Police.
Al Naqbi noted that the Dubai Police received a report at 12.30am from the ship's crew that they were unable to control the ship, which drifted towards the beach. Rescue teams moved from the Port of Dubai and Hamriyah Port using cruisers to rescue the stranded sailors. The rescue teams initially had a difficult time because of strong waves and feared that their vessel would collide with the ship. However they managed to get the sailors out safely and transport them to land.
Al Naqbi noted that the ship was loaded with goods, and that the captain did not fully realise the depth of the water or the strength of the waves. The ship was also brought by the Dubai Police to the beach. He added that the Dubai Police are prepared to deal with any emergencies, and rescue teams are ready 24 hours a day to deal with maritime incidents in the shortest possible time. Major Al Naqbi urged people to call 999 in the event of emergencies and accurately describe their location to ensure a rapid response.
