The Dubai Municipality (DM) has embarked on two key agricultural and irrigation projects. The moves come as part of its plan to transform 8% of the Dubai land to green areas. DM is especially focusing on the areas adjacent to the neighboring emirates like Sharjah.
The first project undertaken in this regard is the interchange of Shaikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road with Amman Street (Oud Al Mutainah intersection), while the second project is an irrigation network to cultivate Al Qusais garbage landfill.
The two projects will cost roughly Dh28,663,000, according to Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of DM.
Lootah said the municipality's plan always aims at beautifying the city of Dubai by implementing the policies, laws, regulations and procedures pertaining to planning, and growing and planting trees at new streets, parks and other areas in Dubai.
More importantly, the municipality will be embarking on a key environment project, which is to turn Al Qusais garbage landfill into a forest, which will be covering an area of 275 hectares.
Lootah said the irrigation system project for Al Qusais landfill will see trees and saplings planted at the site of the landfill.
A national company, he said, won the tender, which was valued at Dh11, 264,767, and the project will be completed in 210 days, including 30 days needed for the initial preparations required for the project.
He said five international companies handed their bids and the municipality managed to cut down the costs of this project from Dh66.5 million to Dh17.4 million.
