A motorist, who was convicted of driving under the influence of drugs, has been sentenced to life in jail after the UAE's top court rejected claims that he's mentally ill.
The Federal Supreme Court upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that handed down the sentence to the Arab man after he was found guilty of possessing and consuming psychotropic drugs.
Official court documents stated that the Arab man was stopped by the police after spotting him speeding and driving recklessly. The police checked his car and recovered psychotropic drugs.
The man was taken for a drug test, which revealed that he had consumed a huge amount of tramadol and other drugs.
After the court of first instance and the appeals court found the Arab man guilty, he challenged the ruling at the UAE's top court, claiming he was mentally ill and wasn't responsible for his actions.
A medical report by doctors appointed by the court, however, said that he didn't suffer from any mental problems.
