The reckless driver behind the gruesome accident that killed two young Emirati brothers earlier this month have been arrested, the Ras Al Khaimah Police said on Wednesday evening, October 30.
Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, General Commander of the RAK Police, said the driver escaped the scene after causing the deadly accident. Four women - mother, sister, sister-in-law and daughter-in-law - also sustained serious injuries.
He hid his car in one of the areas in the emirate until he thought everything was fine, and no one would be able to identify him after he was blamed for the accident reported on October 17, 2019, police said.
But after a few days, he hit the road again, and it was then that he was spotted, tracked down and arrested by the traffic police authorities in three emirates, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Dubai.
The driver admitted to reckless driving and was referred to the traffic prosecution for legal action.
Police records showed that the two brothers - aged 11 and 23 years old - were travelling in the car driven by their 20-year-old sister. Then, all of a sudden, the driver of the car in front of them violently stepped on the brakes and sped off, throwing the Emirati sister off her guard.
The sister lost control of the wheel so the car veered off the road, rammed into a barrier and flipped several times.
Since the horrific accident happened on the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road, Ali Al Yahid, father of the siblings, pledged to track down the driver and bring him to justice.
Investigations showed that the driver was a 38-year-old Asian expat, who worked as a security staff member in a building in the emirate, said Brigadier Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department of the RAK Police.
"He admitted to pressing the brakes all of a sudden in front of the car of the Emirati family," the officer said.
