The Ajman Police have warned pedestrians against jumping over road fences or talking on mobile phones while crossing roads. The fine for crossing roads from unauthorised areas is Dh400.
Lt-Col Saif Abdullah Al Falasi, director of traffic and patrol department at the Ajman Police, said the warning is part of the police's intensified inspection and awareness campaign titled 'Pedestrian safety is common responsibility' targeting jaywalkers.
The police, through camera surveillance, have found that many people jump the road fencing to cross the road, instead of walking to the traffic signal and cross from the authorised area.
Lt-Col Al Falasi said the police are working with the Ajman Municipality to identify pedestrian crossing points, particularly on roads with speed limits in excess of 80kmph. He said the municipality has recently constructed iron fences on roads where pedestrians cross randomly. Crossing from unauthorised areas have resulted in a number of run-over accidents with serious injuries. The civic body has also constructed pedestrian bridges, installed light signals and humps, to allow pedestrians to cross roads safely.
The official also pointed out that police patrols would issue fines to jaywalkers.
Lt-Col Al Falasi called on pedestrians to follow traffic rules and not use their mobile phones while crossing roads. The police currently are working on a one-month long campaign targeting road users to ensure safe crossing of pedestrians. The drive entails distributing brochures in various languages to the public.
