Authorities in the UAE will penalise those caught violating Covid-19 precautionary measures, a top official has warned. She was referring to measures like mandatory use of face masks and the need for social distancing and avoiding gatherings.
"Over the last two weeks, the authorities have received reports about people crowding at shopping centres and other public areas," said Dr Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, official spokesperson of the UAE Government, during a virtual press briefing on Monday. "Restrictions have been eased for commercial centres and other public areas, but this doesn't mean violating the Covid-19 precautionary measures," she said.
She said since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis, the UAE has been prioritising protection for certain categories of people like the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases.
"These Emiratis and residents are a precious group of people and we have an obligation and responsibility to take good care of them. Therefore, we have to abide by the precautionary measures in place and follow medical advice so as to protect them as they are the most vulnerable to coronavirus."
