A taxi driver denied disrespecting and assaulting a policeman while resisting arrest following a quarrel with other cab drivers over customers, Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Wednesday.
According to court records, the 30-year-old sergeant told prosecutors that his team rushed to the site after receiving a complaint about a quarrel. Upon arriving there, police officers saw a group of cab drivers gathered around the 27-year-old Indian taxi driver, accusing him of jumping the queue to pick up customers.
"When we approached him, he denied doing so and started yelling and addressing us (officers) disrespectfully," the sergeant told the prosecutors. As they tried to take him into police custody, the driver allegedly resisted the arrest as he kept sitting on the floor of his car's front seat and refused to move. "We pulled him out of the vehicle."
The driver pushed the officer who was trying to handcuff him. He was later taken to Bur Dubai police station.
The forensic reports showed a bruise on the officer's right hand.
During the court hearing, the defendant denied assault charges and claimed he was assaulted by another cab driver and the police during arrest. "I did not assault anyone. It was I who was assaulted," he told the judge.
A verdict will be issued on January 16.
