Bootlegger jailed for assaulting cops during raid in Dubai

Dubai - He was found guilty of physically assaulting on-duty police officers.

A bootlegger, who assaulted two on-duty police officers during a raid, has been sentenced to six months in jail by a Dubai court.
The Court of First Instance heard the man, who is a 30-year-old security guard from Nigeria, was caught by the officers in possession of a total of 68 liquor bottles and cans which he was selling in public with other accomplices on December 19, last year, in Naif area.
He was found guilty of physically assaulting on-duty police officers and the court ordered his deportation after completion of his jail term. He was referred to the Court of Misdemeanors on the charge of possession of liquor for bootlegging.
A policeman said he was on patrol duty with a colleague in Freej Al Murar around 7:00pm on December 19, last year, when he spotted three African men selling alcohol to people on the street. "We watched them for two to three days in the same area. When we raided them and were arresting them, two fled while the third resisted us fiercely. As we showed him our police cards he pushed me against a wall. He was so aggressive that he also caused my colleague to fall down."
The officer added that they brought the man under control and took him handcuffed into custody.
The other officer corroborated his statement, adding that 31 liquor bottles and 37 beer cans and Dh255 were seized from the place.
The first officer had to undergo medical treatment for his wrist for some time, as shown in several forensic examination reports.
The other cop was left with left wrist bruises according to another forensic report.
The guard can appeal the ruling within 15 days.
