In support of the world's largest grassroots environmental awareness campaign - "Earth Hour" - Bee'ah, the Sharjah Environment Company, held a dedicated community event on 19 March, to raise awareness on how energy consumption affects the carbon footprint we produce, both here in the UAE and across the globe. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) first conceived of the Earth Hour initiative in 2004, with the first official event held in Australia, in 2007.
The objective of the campaign is to highlight the world's energy consumption and its impact on the environment by inviting people to switch off the power supply in their homes and offices - for one hour. For the 2016 event, 19 March at 8:30pm - 9:30pm (local time) was the official"lights out" period. Since 2008, Earth Hour has become an international phenomenon, growing into what is today the largest environmental campaign, by participation, in the world.
Corresponding events and initiatives have sprung up in nearly 200 countries, since the first Earth Hour event, with hundreds of millions of people now taking part. For its part, Bee'ah organised and sponsored an Earth Hour Community Event, held in Al Majaz, Sharjah, on 19 March, which started at 6pmand ended at 9:30 pm and attracted around 500 citizens and Sharjah-based residents. In addition to switching off the power, Bee'ah organised several side events to entertain visitors including activities and workshops that highlighted the importance of recycling and informed people on the choices available for reducing waste and energy consumption.
Organised and run by Bee'ah's School of Environment team, Bee'ah's Earth Hour Community Event 2016, also offered some fun activities surrounding the main event, including glow-in-the-dark mask and t-shirt painting, jar decoration, and hand-printings on canvas.
