Starting Monday, September 28, the Umm Al Quwain police will implement an at-home confiscation scheme for vehicles involved in serious traffic violations. Col Saeed Obaid bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department of the UAQ Police, said vehicles that are ordered to be impounded will no longer be taken to the police impoundment lot.
"Instead, motorists will be allowed to keep their vehicles in their own garages or private parking lots. The police will instal a smart electronic GPS tracker in the vehicle to make sure it is not taken out on the roads," the officer said.
"The tracker will be connected via satellite to the operations room. If the vehicle is moved out, it would send an alarm to the operations room," he explained.
In case the vehicle is moved beyond the stipulated area, a fine will be imposed and the confiscation period doubled, he warned.
The service comes at no extra cost to vehicle owners. They will need to pay the fines and keep the vehicles at home for the confiscation period.
Col bin Aran said motorists can request for the scheme by filling out an application form at the traffic and licensing centre.
"The smart confiscation system for violating vehicles will put an end to the problem of crowded impounded lots."
The smart tracking system is already in operation in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, and has helped bring down traffic violations.
