The Ajman police has kicked off a new campaign that mainly aims to overcome the growing phenomenon of "phone embezzlement" by fraudsters offering various fake rewards.
According to Major Ahmed Saeed Al Nuaimi, deputy director of the Criminal investigation Department (CID), said that the campaign, titled 'Bogus Rewards', mainly aims to stop these fraudulent activities, carried out by people who call their victims, alleging that the latter have won a reward.
The fraudsters then request their victims to send them a sum of money in order to claim the reward, and many victims fell prey to these misleading claims.
This operation is part of the Ajman Police's plan to ensure the safety of members of the public.
"We have been notified by various victims who fell prey to the delusional claims of these fraudsters, as they realised they had been conned after transferring money to the fraudsters. According to victims' testimony, the fraudsters called and introduced themselves as employees of a company and to congratulate them on winning the grand prize. They claimed reward would be sent to them after transferring a certain amount to them, which the victims went on to do," said Major Al Nuaimi.
The campaign is being held in cooperation with Etisalat, to curb the negative phenomenon and to urge people who receive these fake calls, not to respond to them. The public prosecution will also take part in the campaign by increasing people's awareness about the hefty penalty of being engaged in any fraudulent activity.
The public are urged not to give out any of their bank account details or transfer money to people they do not know.
