Just as the clock struck 12 and fireworks exploded, eight babies wailed their way into the world at hospitals across the UAE. Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi recorded five births - two boys and three girls - at exactly 12:00am on January 1.
The proud parents of Layaly Al Naqbi were among those who got the perfect start to the New Year. Mohammed Khamis Khalfan Abdulla Almazrouei, Layaly's father, said: "We are extremely happy and proud that our baby has arrived at this iconic date and time. The start of the New Year is a reason for celebration around the world."
Dr Sausan Abdul Rahman, consultant - obstetrics and gynaecology - said: "Bringing a new life into the world is one of the best feelings. The emotions of the parents make it even more special."
In Abu Dhabi's Mohamed Bin Zayed City, baby Omar Joha was born at exactly 12am at Bareen International Hospital to Syrian couple Mohammad Joha and Sajida. "Both my wife and our baby are in great health and are now resting. This is the best New Year's gift to our family," said the ecstatic father.
Thumbay Hospitals saw the birth of four babies on the day - all girls. Two babies were born exactly at the stroke of midnight at Thumbay Hopsital, Ajman, to Indian mother Santhi Anand and Pakistani mum Sana Yaseen.
A baby was born at 12.01am at the group's Fujairah branch. Her ecstatic father, Rojan Joseph, said: "My wife was born on November 11 (11/11). My baby is born on 1/1. This means the digit 1 is lucky for us!"
Free consulations, vaccination for a year
At the RAK Hospital, Emirati couple Hassan Ali and Safeyya Ali Salem welcomed their baby girl at 3am on the first day of the year. Another baby girl, weighing 2.85kg, was born to Egyptian parents at the hospital on the New Year.
Dr Raza Siddiqui, CEO of Arabian Healthcare Group and executive director at RAK Hospital, said: "As a New Year gift, we will provide free OPD consultation, including vaccination for one year. There are few blessings more joyous than the birth of a baby."
At Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah, a baby girl weighing 3.7kg brought New Year's joy to her Omani parents.
