Six Asian sailors are standing trial at a Ras Al Khaimah court for allegedly smuggling 700 tonnes of petroleum products through the country's waters.
As per court records, the coast guards spotted a ship supplying fuel to a fishing boat off the RAK coast. The six sailors onboard the ship were arrested and referred to the public prosecution.
They were charged with trespassing into the regional waters of the country, carrying inflammable products without informing the bodies concerned, and transporting petroleum products in a marine vessel without a licence.
They were also accused of trading in petroleum products in the country without a licence, sailing in banned areas, and failure to secure medical services onboard. The defendants were also charged with operating the vessel loaded with petroleum products without having fire extinguishing equipment onboard.
The defendants denied the charges, and said that they were transporting the petroleum products to one of the ports in the country.
The defence lawyer told the court that the ship was licensed for transporting petroleum products. He added that all the details of the shipment were registered and available at the port from where the vessel was loaded.
